Thursday February 27 -- The Private Use of Tongues

Scripture Reading: Jude 20-21

But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

Verse for Meditation: Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves. – 1 Corinthians 14:4

Devotional: The gift of tongues is used privately to build up or edify God’s people as they pray or sing in the Spirit. As people practice this gift they are brought closer to God and encouraged in their faith. Jude sees a correlation between praying in the Holy Spirit and keeping yourselves in God’s love. The gift of tongues can serve to help someone pray more effectively even though they may not be aware of the words they are saying. One person described this as “an extra booster pack” for their prayer life.

Some people may react negatively to the idea of a spiritual gift operating primarily to build up an individual. However, if we think about what we are called to do as believers, we are called to steward our lives well so that we can be effective in ministry to others. When we read and study the Bible, listen to sermons and podcasts, memorize scripture, or read good books we are attempting to build up ourselves so that we can grow to be more like Christ. As we grow closer to Jesus both in our knowledge and in our spiritual sensitivity we can be more effective for him.

Question to Consider: What are you doing on a consistent basis to build up your faith and encourage yourself in the Lord? Is there one thing you could begin to do more consistently that will build you up in your faith so that you can be a greater blessing to others?
