Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 14:36-40
Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? If anyone thinks they are a prophet or otherwise gifted by the Spirit, let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command. But if anyone ignores this, they will themselves be ignored. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
Verse for Meditation: For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people. – 1 Corinthians 14:
Devotional: God alone determines how He is to be worshipped. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, part of the temptation Satan brought was for him to be worshipped instead of God. Jesus’ reply to this temptation was immediate and simple, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.” This temptation makes it clear that Satan is always trying to shift the focus of our worship from God to other things. In Corinth, this same shift occurred as men and women began to elevate gifts like tongues above other gifts, seeing the people who used them as more important, more spiritual. God was no longer the focus of their worship.
If we follow God’s way, then we experience peace, comfort, and encouragement. If we abandon His ways, we experience disorder and desolation. As we follow Jesus each and every day, we must make the same choice He made in the wilderness, a choice to worship God and serve Him and no other.
Question to Consider: Examine your heart before the Lord in reference to the way you approach Him in worship. In what ways are you being tempted to worship something other than God?
